Culture Program In 1999, Taiwanese Heritage Society of Houston (THSH) established the Community Service and Culture Committee (CSC). The major purposes of CSC are to enhance and expand THSH's service scopes, and also to promote Taiwanese cultural heritage to general public in the greater Houston area. Since then, CSC has participated in many social assistance and community service events, and has provided cultural activities around the year. Some specific programs of CSC in the past years are described below: Culture Activities
Though the
Community Service and Culture Committee has only been established a few years
ago, THSH's work in serving Taiwanese community and reaching out to other
ethnic communities has actually begun in 1990. We are proud of many accomplishments
we have achieved thus far. We hope to work even harder to expand our services
to the greater Houston community, and to share Taiwanese and other Asian
cultures with our fellow Americans. For further information about CSC, contact its committee chairperson at 713-271-5885. |

Activities 1.
Taiwanese Heritage Week.
During the 3rd week of every May, CSC has organized concert and art
exhibition to celebrate the Taiwanese Heritage Week. CSC has invited several world-class
Taiwanese musicians to perform music, which are composed by Taiwanese as well
as international musicians. In 2000, a high school orchestra in Houston was
invited to perform Taiwanese songs at the Taiwanese Community Center. 2.
Asian American Festival.
In every October, CSC would take part in the Asian American Festival at
Hermann Park. Taiwanese arts, crafts and cultural information are displayed
in exhibition booth. In addition, Taiwanese aboriginal folk dance, kung fu,
and instrumental music are performed on the Satellite Stage in the park. 3.
Asian Heritage Month.
In May of 2002, over 100 people participated in the celebration of Asian
Heritage Month, with a big parade float symbolizing Taiwanese pursuit of
democracy and harmony for a peaceful world. Also, CSC exhibited at the Alief
Community Park cultural items and information about four major ethnic groups
in Taiwan. 4. Cultural Display at Public Libraries.
Traditions of Taiwanese Lunar New Year and Taiwanese toys of the fifties were
on display at the Sugar Land Library of Fort Bend County for the entire month
of February 2003. Displays of similar nature are often held at other public
libraries. 5.
Culture Seminar.
Through years, CSC has invited famous writers, historians, and professors to
lecture on Taiwanese culture and heritage. The contents of these lectures are
usually published in Houston's TAA Journal. Besides, CSC has often worked
with Community Outreach Committee, another working committee of THSH, to
provide other community organizations certain programs and activities
relating to Taiwanese and other Asian culture and heritage. These cultural
events have benefited much to many people, such as international students of
local universities, and American teachers who are bound for Taiwan to teach
English there. 6.
Food and Game Bazaar.
Once a year, Food and Game Bazaar attracts hundreds of children and adults to
our Taiwanese Community Center. They have a unique opportunity to taste great
varieties of authentic Taiwanese foods, and to play many kinds of fun games. 7. Cultural Exchange. Since 2001, both CSC and Community Outreach Committee have worked together to provide field trips to indigent students who are from neighboring charter schools or after-school programs. These field trips at the Taiwanese Community Center are designed for students to learn other ethnic cultures and have fun at the same time. |
